The prairies in the park are looking great. A few patches of ragweed and crown vetch have re-sprouted in Swain Prairie since treatments earlier in the season. Those patches will be cut prior to going to seed.
Adaptive Restoration and volunteers have done well with the herbaceous weeds throughout the summer months. As fall approaches, so does brush season. A crew will start cutting and treating brush in the coming month. Upper Walnut prairie is the priority for brush treatment as it’s such a high visibility area and there are a couple of larger patches of brush that need attention. It is likely that a mower for the patches and brush saws for the more disparate brush.
The transition zone at Upper Walnut was mowed by the township. This area had previously had weed seeds removed and bagged by volunteers. Moving forward, the plan is to mow that entire section before weeds go to seed to save time and money.
